Archaeology Notes

NT86NE 5 872 682.

(NT 872 682) A cairn, as shown on Armstrong's map, appears to fall on Cross Law.

A & Son Armstrong 1771.

Lumsdaine Hill: Cairn, now obliterated.

J H Craw 1923.

At NT 8712 6841, about 800m W of the summit of Cross Law, is a turf-covered mound which is possibly a cairn though stone is not very evident. It is 8.0m in diameter and 0.7m high, and has an artificial appearance.

The summit of Cross Law is occupied by an OS triangulation pillar on top of a covered reservoir, and it is not possible to deterine whether a cairn ever occupied the site.

Visited by OS (CJP) 29 September 1956.

The 'cairn' described in the previous field report appears to be a natural feature. No other cairn-like feature was located in the area.

Visited by OS (RD) 30 December 1965.
