Archaeology Notes

NT66SE 10 6514 6239.

(NT 6515 6240) A cairn, measuring 40ft in diameter and 5ft in height, is situated just over 1350ft OD on the summit of Priestlaw Hill. It has been robbed of stone for the construction of a sheepfold and a cross- shaped mound of stones, which encroach on its W side, but otherwise appears undisturbed.

R W Feachem 1963; RCAHMS 1924, visited 1913

NT 6514 6239. Though somewhat confused by an overlying sheepfold, the limits of the cairn are distinct. It measures overall 15.0m in diameter and survives to a height of 1.3m.

Surveyed at 1/10,000.

Visited by OS (JRL) 11 May 1979.

Activities

Field Visit (13 June 1913)

226. Cairn and Enclosure, Priestlaw Hill.

On the summit of Priestlaw Hill, at an elevation of over 1250 feet above sea-level, is a circular stone cairn 40 feet in diameter and 4 feet in height. Encroaching on the western side is a quadrangular stone walled enclosure, 54 feet long and 30 feet broad at the middle, in the interior of which a cross of loose stones, laid on the surface of the ground, has been made in late times. The central portion of the cairn does not seem to have been disturbed, although the cairn may have been robbed to a certain extent to supply material for the adjoining structures.

RCAHMS 1924, visited 13 June 1913.
