(NT 5530 8277) Windmill (NAT) (disused)

OS 6" map (1968)

The stump of a late 17th century tower mill stands on Balgone Barns farm. The structure, of rubble and freestone stands about 35ft high and is 15ft in diameter, on walls 3ft thick. An underground vault extends 20ft out from the base of the tower. There were two doors, one of which is now blocked up. The major part of the tower is still sound although about a third has collapsed from the top in the S arc. Originally a barley mill, it probably fell into disuse in the 18th century and was heightened by about 10ft to become a dovecot. It had certainly ceased to function as a windmill by 1799, when it was recorded on Forrester's map as "pigeon cot".

I Donnachie and N Stewart 1967

The remains of this dovecot are as described above.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 15 November 1962 and (SFS) 14 July 1975.
