(NT 56254 84200) Dovecot (NR)

OS 6" map (1968)

Dovecot, Heugh: This cylindrical dovecot, now surrounded by poultry runs, measures 48 1/2ft in external circumference. The 3ft thick random rubble wall, partly harled and once whitewashed, carries above the roof to a height of about 24 ft and ends with a stepped parapet descending from N to S. The original roof has been replaced by flat concrete.

There are sixteen entry holes in a stone and brick grid on the S side. There is a single string course. Internally, there are 587 nests, made of stone and brick. This dovecot is in fair repair.

J Whitaker 1938; D C Bailey and M C Tindall 1963

This dovecot, which is as described above, is ascribed by Dr J S Richardson to the 16th century.
