Desk Based Assessment

(NT 5239 1421) Cocklaw Castle (NR) (Site of)

(NT 5238 1424) Castle Well (NR)

OS 6" map (1916-38)

Cocklaw Castle (Site) and Castle Well. Of the castle itself nothing now remains. The small roughly built well, which stands immediately N of the site and separated from it by the drive of the modern house, is apparently not of any great age. Although relatively unimportant, the tower of Cocklaw was the scene, in 1403, of a famous siege by Henry Hotspur which is fully described by Bower in his continuation of the Scotichronicon (Book xv, ch.15). The tower still existed at the time when the description was written, i.e. about 1440.
