(Socketed axe: Newton variant of Dowris type). Hoard, purchased for the National Museum in 1909, but nothing is known about the site and circumstances of discovery. Socketed axe, cleaned, slightly corroded, flaw below loop, trimmed, scratchmarks on blade, high haft ribs. Length 79mm, mouth 29 x 35mm, cutting edge 62mm, weight 225 gms. A 'Dowris type' socketed axe and a socketed gouge (RMS, DE 68 and DO 36) were found together at Tynehead.
