Archaeology Notes

NT13SW 6 1120 3410.

(NT 112 341). Enclosure, Rachan Mill (Site). An air photograph shows an enclosure as a crop mark on a slight eminence, which rises just above the 700ft contour, a quarter of a mile SSW of Rachan Mill farmhouse.

The enclosure is D-shaped on plan, the arc being formed by a single ditch and the chord by a long natural scarp which runs from NE to SW at the edge of the narrow floodplain of the Holms Water. There is an entrance in the E side of the ditch, and the interior, which shows no trace of structures, measures about 200ft along the chord by about 100ft transversely.

RCAHMS 1967, visited 1961.

There is nothing visible on the ground.

Visited by OS (IA) 6 December 1972.
