(Name: NT 0193 4953) Field System (NR)
OS 25" map (1974)
Centred at NT 0198 4952, about 850ft OD, on SE-facing slopes is a field system consisting of well preserved clearance heaps and short stretches of lynchets from 0.1m to 0.4m high.
Visited by OS (DWR) 20 July 1971
The area delineated by OS (DWR) is increased by the RCAHMS, who describe NT 021 498 - NT 022 483. On Greens Moor, extending southwards along the spine of the ridge for a distance of 1.3km, there is a group of at least eighty small cairns, which appear for the most part as low grass or heather-covered mounds from 3m to 6m in diameter and not more than 0.3m in height. (For discussion on this type of monument, see NT05SE 3). RCAHMS 1978, visited 1975
Centred at NT 023 493 and occupying about 30 hectares of undulating moorland is a spread of small cairns as described in the previous information. They are similar to the many others in the area and are probably stone clearance cairns. The distribution of the mounds and the presence of the occasional lynchet, indicate a pattern of small plots.
Visited by OS (BS) 20 February 1979
Field Visit (October 1975)
NT 021 498 – 022 483. Cairns IV, Green Moor. Extending southwards along the spine of the ridge from a point about 400 m N of NT04NW 16 for a distance of 1·3 km, there is a group of not fewer than eighty small cairns, which appear for the most part as low grass- or heather-covered stony mounds from 3 m to 6 m in diameter and not more than 0·3 m in height.
RCAHMS 1978, visited October 1975.
Field Visit (1988)
This cairnfield was resurveyed at 1:2500, with individual features at 1:200 prior to afforestation of part of its area. A total of 88 clearance cairns, averaging 2.4m to 3.8m in diameter and 0.2m to 0.4m high were recorded and their relationship to the known long cairn (NT04NW 21) and the four round cairns (NT04NW 5, 16, 19, 20) were plotted. A further 5 ring enclosures with associated features, probably stock related; areas of rig and furrow within the cairnfield and the evidence of local exploitation of freestone with associated artefact wasters, were also recorded.
