The Tolbooth, a considerably altered 17th century building, was at one time the jail. It was demolished, but for the steeple, in 1951 (Hamilton official guide).
Name Book 1858; D MacGibbon and T Ross 1892
The Tolbooth steeple was destroyed in January 1954 as the foundations had become eaten away by the waters of the Cadzow Burn (Glasgow Evening News 19 and 21 January 1954).
