Archaeology Notes

NS69NW 8 6401 9501.

Broich House, Kippen, seems to have been surrounded by a rampart and fosse.

Statistical Account (OSA) 1796

The old house of Broich, which stood in front but a little west of the site of the mansion house of Arngomery, was demolished in 1852. In front of the house was a fosse or ditch.

W Chrystal 1903

A carved stone, apparently a lintel, inscribed IE 1686 AL, has been built into the S. side of the transe that gives access to the stable yard at Arngomery. It is believed to have come from an old building which formerly stood on the site.

RCAHMS 1963

Arngomery mansion was built in 1812 upon the site of Broich House.

Name Book 1860

The date of Arngomery House in unknown. The inscribed stone in the stables was brought to Broich by the Leckie-Ewing family who bought the estate in 1753. It is said to have come from an earlier family seat in the vicinity of Balloch, Dumbartonshire (Col. J G MacKellar, Arngomery House). There are no visible traces of an earlier building, nor of a fosse, at Arngomery. The date-stone, as described by RCAHMS, has been cemented into the stable wall (at NS 6401 9495) and appears to be a later insertion.
