Archaeology Notes

NS69NE 5 6903 9822.

An earthen mound, a gun-shot from what was probably Coldoch Broch (NS69NE 2) was dug into c.1758 when it was found "full of urns, some with inscriptions, not legible". The proprietor intended to plant it with trees.

Gents Mag 1771

Probably the same mound as that referred to by MacLagan as about half a mile west of Coldroch Broch and c.50ft diameter.

C Maclagan 1872

At NS 6903 9822, on top of a low hillock, there is a stony mound, averaging 14.0m in diameter and 1.5m in height, surrounded by a dry-stone wall and surmounted by trees. Almost certainly the barrow from which urns were recovered c.1758.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (RD) 26 September 1968
