Archaeology Notes

NS57NE 5 5683 7923.

NS 568 793. An oval mound, on Broadgate Farm, was opened in a trail excavation in April, 1953, to learn whether or not it was artificial. Although this point was not dertermined, a short cist of Bronze Age type was found, two ft beneath the surface, near the north end. The mound measures about 150ft long by 75ft wide and 9ft high, and is aligned approximately north and south. The cist was covered again, without being opened.

J G Scott 1953.

NS 5683 7923 A tree-covered mound, orientated NNE-SSW, but otherwise as described above. It appears to be artificial and may be a long barrow. No traces were found of the 1953 excavations or the cist.

Visited by OS (F D C) 9 April 1957.

This mound is as described by previous OS investigator, but whether it is artificial or not is not apparent.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (W D J) 2 May 1966.

Archaeological Evaluation (17 May 2017 - 31 May 2017)

An archaeological trial trenching evaluation was carried out in the land around the edge of the scheduled Broadgate burial mound (SM4765) and 20 test-pits were excavated in its vicinity. The spoil from the test-pits was sieved to test for the presence of artefacts and a single unworked flint was recovered. No archaeological features or deposits were revealed by the evaluation.
