Archaeology Notes

NS57NE 16 59 78.

In 1800 a small structure of oak and birch stakes was found below the surface of a moss at Craigend. It was 3 ft 9 ins (1.1 m) long by 22 ins (0.5 m) wide, and the stakes were over 5 ft (1.5 m) in length, driven close together, and from the bruises on their sharpened ends appeared to have been cut by a stone hatchet. There seemed to have been originally an entrance from the west, and a few pieces of wood indicated that the enclosure had originally been roofed (New Statistical Account [NSA] 1845). (Craigend is at NS 592 787, Craigend Muir name at NS 588 776, and Craigend Castle estate centred at NS 545 777).
