Archaeology Notes

NS48NE 8 c. 457 886

For Buchanan Castle (NS 46194 88608) and associated buildings, see NS48NE 21.00.

There are now no visible traces of the Peel of Buchanan which is said (RCAHMS 1963) to have stood about 200 paces in front of Buchanan Old House. The site is now part of a golf course, and one of the green-keepers told the Commission's officer that he had come across traces of stone foundations in the area. A small stretch of water, about 400 yds to the SW, which appears to have been formed within an old course of the Endrick Water, is known as Peel Pond.

W Nimmo 1817; RCAHMS 1963, visited 1959.

The old Buchanan House, consisting of a tower and other buildings, was demolished before 1724.

W Macfarlane 1906-8.

No further information.

Visited by OS (B S) 4 December 1973.

Buchanan Old House (NS48NE 24.00) is at NS 45724 88802.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 28 October 2009.
