(NS 4929 4297) Dun (NR)

OS 6" map (1968)

A small, well-preserved fort (Smith) or dun (RCAHMS) is situated on the S side of Hareshawmuir Water, on Langdyke farm. It is 13 paces in diameter and is surrounded by a turf-and-stone wall which, on the land side, is still 8ft high. There is no ditch.

J Smith 1895; RCAHMS 1957

This small dun is situated on the edge of an escarpment with steep slopes to the N. It has a single surrounding bank of earth and stone, which appears to have a wall as its core, and is hollowed out in the centre. The entrance could not be determined as the remains are too mutilated, but the easiest approach is from the E. There is a terrace on all sides except the N.

Surveyed at 1:2500 scale.

Visited by OS (JLD) 14 August 1956

The remains of this dun, situated in a naturally defensive position (about 150m OD) are generally as described. It was probably circular on plan, with an over all diameter of up to 18m. No external or internal facing material is discernible and it is not possible to ascertain a wall thickness from the disturbed remains.

Contemporary plane-table surveys and inked drawings, where available, can be viewed online in most cases - see 'Digital Images'. The original typecripts, notebooks and drawings can also be viewed in the RCAHMS search room.
