This intermediate station on the joint line of the former Caledonian Rly and the Glasgow and South Western Rly from Lugton to Kilmarnock was opened (by the Glasgow, Barrhead and Kilmarnock Joint Rly) on 27 March 1871. It was grouped into the London, Midland and Scottish Rly, closed on 7 November 1966, reopened on 5 June 1967, and remains in regular use by passenger traffic.
