Scope and Content Stewarton Station, Stewarton, Ayrshire (East Ayrshire council area) This station was built for the Glasgow, Barrhead and Kilmarnock Joint Railway. This railway was built jointly by the Caledonian and Glasgow and South Western railways to give a direct route to Kilmarnock. This view shows the south-bound platform building from the south west. This was the upper level of the building, and access to the north-bound platform was through a subway. It was the largest station on the joint line. this railway gave the Caledonian Railway access to Kilmarnock, and allowed the Glasgow and South Western to run joint Anglo-Scottish services with the Midland Railway. This station closed in 1966,and the buildings were demolished, but it has reopened. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
