(NS 3691 8252) Round Hill (NR)

OS 6" map (1923)

Round Hill. An artificial mound a short distance south of Cameron Home Farm, considered to be an ancient tumulus. Nothing, however, has been discovered at or about the place to lead to its supposed origin.

Name Book 1896

Round Hill is an earth and stone mound, measuring 30 x 20 metres and 2.5 metres high; its top is 6.0 metres in diameter. It appears to be artificial and resembles a motte rather than a tumulus. There are, however, a number of morainic mounds on the hillside round Loch Lomond, and is possibly one of these.

Visited by OS (JLD) 1 October 1956

Round Hill: Probably represents the remains of a prehistoric burial cairn. At the present time it is oval on plan, and measured 90 feet from NW to SE, 66ft, transversely, and 11 feet in maximum height. Surface indications suggest that the NE side has been cut back in modern times, and that originally the mound was nearly circular with a diameter of about 95 feet.

RCAHMS MSS notes, visited 4 May 1955.

The mound measures 29.0m NW - SE by 21.0m transversely, its flat top measures 11.5m x 7.0m and it has a maximum height of 2.5m. It is probably a cairn, no trace of a cist or kerb was seen.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 25 January 1963
