Activities

Desk Based Assessment (22 June 2017)

Now demolished, the Inchgreen Gasworks were located on the south bank of the River Clyde in Greenock, to the east of the entrance to the Great Harbour (NS37NW 18). They were founded in 1872 by Greenock Corporation and are depicted on the 2nd edition of the OS 25-inch map (Renfrewshire 1897, Sheets 002.07 and 002.11), with three gas holders in the W part of the works and two large buildings in the E part. The gasworks closed in the 1960s and the site was later used as a fitting-out wharf by Lithgows Ltd and Lower Clyde Shipbuilders Ltd. Aerial photography (GoogleEarth) shows that whilst the caps of the gas-holders had been removed, the circular brick water tanks still survived at the end of 2005. However, later photography shows that these had been filled in by May 2010.
