Archaeology Notes

NS07SW 6 0056 7278 to 0057 7279.

NS 003 726. On a large boulder are thirteen cup marks, 10cms in diameter; three are distinct, the rest rather faint. There is also a groove 17.5cm by 6.5cm. On a smaller boulder, twelve metres to the NE, are eight poorly defined cup-marks.

I Hopkins 1972.

NS 0057 7278. Two cup-marked rocks as described by the previous authority.

Surveyed at 1/10,000.

Visited by OS (B S) 15 November 1976.

These two cup-marked boulders are situated on the SW flank of Muclich Hill, some 70m NW of a bloomery mound (NS07SW 7). On the largest boulder, which is fractured along its centre, there are at least twenty-one cup marks, two of which form a dumbbell. On the smaller boulder, which lies 12m to the SSW, there is a single weathered cup.

Visited by RCAHMS (GFG, LAD) 31 March 2009.

Note (18 April 2019)

Date Fieldwork Started: 18/04/2019

Compiled by: Rock Art Bute

Location Notes: The panel is situated in rough grazing and moorland on the gently sloping SW facing flank of Muclich Hill, overlooking a wide drainage basin and remnants of possible field systems to the SW, and the Sound of Mull and Tignabruich to the NW. There is a hut circle on the shoulder of the hill about 60m to the ESE, and a bloomery mound about 70m to the SE. Another rock art panel, Muclich Hill 2, lies 12m downslope to the SSW. The panel to 12m to the NE mentioned in the Canmore record as having eight cupmarks has only natural features on its surface

Panel Notes: This is a large, roughly square flat surfaced schist slab measuring approximately 2.3x2.3m and 0.7m high on its SW side, with its N side at ground level. There is a raised ridge running long the centre of the panel, with a wide quartz vein at its NE end. The flat upper surface of the stone features 18 cupmarks and 3 additional faint possible cupmarks, 1 cup with an arc or partial ring, a courgette. The motifs form 2 groups either side of the ridge. One of the cups on the E side of the ridge is placed over a wide fissure.
