Archaeology Notes

NS05NW 009 c.0430 5987.

Excavations following the discovery of the side slab of a cist when ploughing in 1977 revealed 5 large kerb stones which, with the edge of the cairn material, defined one third of the perimeter of a cairn 10m in diameter. The kerb was packed with stones on the outside. The cairn was set against a ridge of raised beach material. The site has been back filled.

D N Marshall 1977; 1978; 1979.

Activities

Field Visit (7 May 2009)

Nothing is now visible of the cairn that was discovered in a ploughed field immediately NW of Little Kilmory farmsteading (NS05SW 29) in 1977 and subsequently excavated by Marshall. There is some doubt about the exact position of the cairn (Marshall sites two separate grid references, NS 045 598 and NS 045 500), but it was probably found close to the centre of the field (c. NS 0430 5987), which was under grass on the date of visit. Photographs

taken during the excavation (provided by I McArthur, Kilchattan) show the approximate location of the cairn.

Visited by RCAHMS (GFG, JMH) 7 May 2009.
