(NS 0144 4578) Site of Circle (NR).

OS 6" map, (1924)

It has been stated, on authority which seems sufficient, that up till 1836 a double circle of tall standing stones exisited here. They were removed to make a fence, only a single pillar remaining. The present owner of the farm maintains that no such circle existed there; there was only the single stone, raised about 1836, and placed in its present upright position.

Source: J Bryce 1863.

This circle, which was removed about 1840, consisted of a number of erect stones, with a large slab lying flat. The slab was placed on end by those who demolished the circle, and it still stands, prominently, to mark the site. A quantity of ashes was found underneath it.

Source: Name Book 1864.

All that remains of this circle is a single standing stone situated on gently sloping pastureland near the edge of a steep slope. It is a plain weathered slab, 2.7m high, 1.1m broad and 0.4m thick.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (T R G) 1 December 1977.
