(NS 0562 2828) Stone (NR)

OS 6" map, (1924)

Traditionally, Kingscross Point takes its name from Robert the Bruce having left from here for Carrick. This large square stone, 6-7ft high, is said to commemorate the event, but there is no knowledge of when, or by whom, it was erected. It does not seem to have much antiquity about it.

Name Book 1864.

NS 0561 2828. This unmarked granite stone stands on the lower N slopes of a rocky knoll above the Point. It is now leaning and only a 0.8m tall, 0.4m square piece is exposed above a 1.0m high cairn of stone and modern debris which surrounds and possibly supports it. It is possibly a Bronze Age standing stone to which a later tradition is attached, but in its present state this is conjectural.

Revised at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (J R L) 13 November 1977.

NS 0561 2828 Site identified as part of a coastal zone assessment survey.
