Archaeology Notes ( - 1971)

NM89NE 15 8525 9650.

NR 853 965. The outcrop of rock on the N side of the garden SW of Kilbride has at least 71 cups in a space of 20' x 6'; they are mostly fairly shallow, but there is one basin, 9 1/2" x 10 1/4" x 5 1/2" deep and 6 1/4" across its flat bottom; it is ringed by small faint cups. Possibly this rock basin is associated with St Bride's Chapel

(NR89NE 1). At the extreme SW end of the ridge, there is a kidney shape formed by a curving line joining two cups.

Sources: M Campbell and M Sandeman 1964; M Campbell 1959.

The outcrop rock referred to by Campbell (1959; 1964) lies at NR 8525 9650 and is as described.

Visited by OS (RD) 21 October 1971.

Activities

Field Visit (May 1983)

NR 852 964. The crest of the ridge close to the NW garden wall is decorated with about seventy plain cupmarks, to which the basin of a knocking-stone has been added (Campbell and Sandeman 1964; Morris 1977).

Location Notes: Kilbride 4 (ScRAP 1630) lies on the NW edge of the garden next to the dry-stone wall. The outcrop is on flat land at the bottom of the valley. The garden is heavily overgrown, and the house lies to the NE of the panel. The outcrop has no determinable aspect or slope. It is in an area where there are numerous other rock art sites nearby and there is a chapel roughly 200 m to the NW of the panel. The panel has a clear view looking E, and lies approximately 20 m from an outcrop with three previously recorded cup marked rocks (Kilbride 1-3; ScRAP IDs: 2755, 3100, 3101; Canmore ID: 39435). The panel is approximately 10 metres to the N of Kilbride 5 (ScRAP ID 1801; Canmore ID: 39436). The cup and ring marked stone grave slab (ScRAP ID: 3196) is located c. 2m to the SW on the opposite side of a tree.

Panel Notes: The panel is located in its original context within the landscape in the form of a rocky outcrop. It is approximately 5 m in length and 1.7 m wide with a max height of 0.2 m. It is gently sloping to the SW, the carved surface is also orientated in the same direction. The rock is schist which is hard and has a fine grain. It also has fissures, cracks and natural hollows across the surface. The motifs consist of 45 cupmarks, 3 of these have partial rings. There are also 8 possible cupmarks. There is a particularly significant feature, a basin with a circumference of 0.3 m and a diameter of 0.1 m, which is believed to be much later (potentially Medieval) in date, although it may be contemporary with the motifs. To reveal all previously recorded motifs, extensive turf will have to be removed as well as the felling of a large Spruce tree which now covers the S end of the outcrop.
