Archaeology Notes ( - 1977)

NR86SW 8 8030 6346

See also NR86SW 9.

NR 803 637. A cairn, 53' in diameter, with two concentric kerbs 18' and 27' from the centre, is situated on the S slope of the hill. It is 14' high on W, 8' on E, owing to ground slope. Trees grow on it, but there is no sign of opening. A small pile of stones 15' NW seems artificial.

M Campbell and M Sandeman 1964

NR 8029 6346. This cairn is generally as described, although fallen trees and vegetation obscure the alleged kerbs. An amorphous scatter of stones around a rock outcrop to the N is probably clearance.

Surveyed at 1:10,000.

Visited by OS (DWR) 28 June 1973

NR 8030 6347. This cairn is almost completely covered by bracken, small trees and felled timber, making a thorough examination difficult. Its edge, however, is fairly well defined but no extent of kerbing can be seen. A slight berm, suggestive of a Wessex-type bell cairn is discernible on the SE and NW sides but this does not appear elsewhere and is probably fortuitous. No inner kerb can be distinguished.

Surveyed at 1/10,000.

Visited by OS (BS) 9 March 1977.

Activities

Field Visit (August 1986)

There are two cairns (see also NR86SW 9) in an area of felled trees in Achaglachgach Forest 1.25km SW of Torinturk Village and 600m SSE of Dun a' Choin Duibh (NR86SW 4). The cairns were encumbered by trees and lopped branches on the date of visit, and, although they could still be seen, the following account is based on earlier descriptions made when they were more clearly visible.

This cairn measures about 10m in diameter and 2m in height; although many large stones protrude, no definite kerbstones could be indentified. The centre of the cairn is hollowed and it has perhaps been disturbed by treasure-seekers (Campbell and Sandeman 1964).

RCAHMS 1988, visited August 1986
