Archaeology Notes

NR56NW 14 5257 6767

At NR 5256 6767, on an easterly slope within abandoned 18th/19th century cultivation, is a round cairn with cist. It is heather-covered and measures 5.5m diameter by 0.8m high; no kerb is visible. The cist, centrally positioned and aligned E-W, measures 1.1m long by 0.7m wide by 0.5m deep. The side slabs remain, but the cap-stone is displaced over the east end; the floor of the cist is disturbed peat and stones.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (J M) 3 May 1978.

Activities

Measured Survey (April 1979)

RCAHMS surveyed the cairns with plane-table and alidade at a scale of 1:100. The resultant plan was redrawn in ink and published at the reduced scale of 1:250 (RCAHMS 1984, fig. 54A). A more detailed survey of the cist was also taken (DC 69) but not published.

Field Visit (April 1979)

NR 525 676. There are four cairns situated in an area of rig-and-furrow cultivation about 210m WSW of Jura parish church (RCAHMS 1984, No. 350).

The largest cairn measures 5m by 4.5m and 0.5m in height. At the centre there are the remains of an almost square, above-ground cist measuring internally about 0.8m by 0.7m and 0.55m in greatest depth. The two side-slabs and the displaced E end-slab are formed of stones set on edge, but the w end of the cist is built of drystone walling; only two courses now remain but originally there were probably three, the upper of which may have extended over the N side-slab, as it stands 0.2m lower than the S side-slab. The capstone, lies at the E. At the date of visit the opportunity was taken to excavate the interior of the cist but nothing was found.

The three other cairns lie to the SSE and all measure about 4m in diameter and 0.4m in height.

RCAHMS 1984, visited April 1979
