(NO 8580 7887) Bronze Age Cist found 1970 (NAT)

OS 1:10000 map (1974)

A short cist was found in a natural deposit of sand and gravel on 15th February 1970 by William Adams of Brigstane Cottage, Catterline, when moving part of a bank which protruded into his garden. It contained the inhumation of a five year old child, accompanied by a beaker, which contained a fragment of glass and the stem epidermis of grain.

The contents of the cist were sent to Aberdeen University for examination. Mr Adams indicated the find spot at NO 8579 7886 (which falls within the garden of Brigstane Cottage; the published position, outside the garden, appears to have been slightly mis-plotted). The cist has been destroyed.
