Archaeology Notes

NO79NE 17 7934 9503

A round cairn about 14.0m in diameter and about 1.2m average height. The centre is mutilated with several small 'excavation' pits but no cist is visible. There is no sign of any kerb stones. There are several small enclosures (about 1.5m diameter) to the immediate south-east of the cairn built from the cairn material.

Resurveyed 1:2500.

Visited by OS July 1972.

This cairn is situated on a gentle NW-facing slope 150m WNW of the recumbent stone circle and ring-cairn (NO79SE 2 and NO79SE 3 ) in Clune Wood; it is oval, measuring 20m from NW to SE by 16.5m transversely, and the height of the mound ranges from 1.8m on the NW to 0.5m on the SE, where the cairn material has been spread up the slope. The surface of the cairn has been disturbed by the excavation of pits and the construction of several small enclosures.

J Smith 1880; RCAHMS 1984, visited February 1984.
