A large heap of loose stones. The word Shiels appears to be modern, and applies to the knap, on which the cairn is situated.
Name Book 1863.
The Cairn of Shiels is situated on the highest point of a ridge at about 850ft OD. It comprises a circular mound 7.0m in diameter and 0.2m in height eccentrically placed within an oval bank measuring 16.8m NW-SE by 13.6m transversely from crest to crest and 3.0m average width. Within the bank there is a shallow ditch, now partly filled with modern field clearance.
Resurveyed at 1:2500.

Cairn of Shiels NO 747 717 NO77SW 7
This cairn stands on a ridge 900m SE of The Shiels farmhouse; it measures 20.5m in diameter and 1.5m in height. What may be the remains of a second cairn (measuring 5m in diameter by 0.3m in height) are situated 8m to the ENE.
