(NO 7589 7884) Castle (NR) (Site of)
OS 6" map, (1959)
This is said, locally, to be the site of the Castle of Mondynes, on a natural ridge. No record of a castle here can be found although William of Montfort and Humphrey of Berkeley were probably settled at Mondynes in 1178 to 1198 (Jervise 1861). There has evidently been a building although the foundations have been destroyed; traces of the possible enclosures of a garden can still be seen.
Name Book 1863; A Jervise 1861.
A hall on the lands of Moneythin (Mondynes) is mentioned in a charter of 1368.
W Cramond 1894.
No trace and no further information.
Visited by OS (R L) 7 December 1967.
