Field Visit (28 March 2019)
This building is situated on a grass-grown platform cut-back into the steep S-facing slope 17.5m SW of the barrack block (NH86NW 9.36). It measures 7.2m from E to W by 4.5m transversely over concrete walls with chamfered edges up to 0.25m high. Metal straps for a sill-beam on top of the outer walls suggest a timber superstructure, but there is also a central support wall running the length of the building. At the centre of the W end is a concrete step leading up to a concrete plinth (about 1.2m square), possibly for a stove, within the interior. A second step is situated at the W end of the S wall.
A sketch map of the battery in the Fort Record Book held by the National Archives at Kew (ADM 7/942) identifies this building as the Officers’ Mess.
