Activities

Field Visit (16 May 2018)

There is a large sub-oval enclosure on the SW flank of Traprain Law, situated immediately NE of the boundary wall and 130m SSE of an unroofed building (NT57SE 190). It measures about 40m from NW to SE by 20m transversely within a boulder defined bank, and is bisected by a central bank that runs NE and SW. A depression at its SE end may be a natural spring.

About 8m to the W of this enclosure, there is a stretch of bank extending for 12m from SSW to NNE. Between this and the enclosure there is a hollow track that runs from SSW to NNE for about 25m before turning to the ESE for at least 50m. A second track is located about 50m NW of the enclosure running from NT 57753 74431 to NT 57824q 74420, a distance of at least 70m. There is little evidence to date these features, although the proximity of the enclosure to the Lawend farmstead (NT57SE 118) and the building (NT57SE 190) suggests that they could date as late as the 18th or 19th century.
