Activities

Field Visit (1 November 2016)

The remains of seven shieling huts and two mounds are spread out in an arc over a distance of 150m along the N edge of a flat boggy area which lies E of Loch Crocan and forms the floor of a natural amphitheatre otherwise defined by the steep slopes that rise up behind the huts. Described from the W end of the group, firstly there are two huts which are subrectangular on plan and measure 5m in length by about 1.5m in breadth within stone footings. Then three oval huts range in size from 2m to 2.7m in diameter within low walls. Close to the E end there are two huts that each contain two compartments, the larger of the two being at the lower end of the structure and presumably originally linked to the smaller, upper, compartment by a short passage. Both of these structures measure about 5.6m in internal length and from 2m to 2.3m in breadth within walls up to 1.1m in thickness and 0.4m in height. A lambing pen lies immediately E of the most easterly hut. Where they are visible, the entrances to all the huts tend to be on the S or SE. At the E end of the group are two mounds, neither measuring more than 5m in diameter that probably represent the wasted remains of huts.
