Standing Building Recording (4 May 2016 - 10 June 2016)
The workshop and stores date to c.1880s and comprise a rectangular block with both brick built and ashlar-built structures. The brick-built section has a c.1990s flat roofed annex, last used for storing clinical gas, attached to its east end.
The south-facing elevation of the 1880s block has ashlar and brick-built walls with a slate roof with wide projecting eaves. The fenestration includes three bays with double leaved doors surmounted by four-paned windows. The slate roof is broken by ashlar ridge copings between which roof lights run the full length of the slate roof. At the eastern end, the workshop has a hipped roof with a cupola covered with a leaded roof and ball finial.
The western end of the workshop is built of snecked sandstone with a large segmented arched-opening with large sliding doors below. On the east side of the arched doorway are four large mullioned windows with 4-over-2 sash-and-case windows. On the west side of the arched doorway is a first floor loading bay with hoisting beam above a double-leafed doorway on the ground floor. The roof is slated with clearstory ridge lights.
The curved west-facing gable contains six bays with five uniform casement windows surmounted by three smaller windows. The south end of the elevation contains a mullioned 8- paned window. The slate roof is hipped. The north-facing elevation shares the same roof configuration as the south-facing elevation but it is stone-built throughout and has at least 16 bays with sash-and-case windows.
