Activities

Field Visit (September 2013 - April 2014)

A square-plan mixed stone rubble building with door on the north, located on the west side of Home Farm drive, north of the stables, just outside the NTS ownership boundary. It is partially overgrown with ivy on the north-west that has penetrated the slate roof. The building is positioned at the bend of the waterway comprising the Laundry burn (W12) and former mill dam (W13), the latter being now infilled and culverted.

The building is first shown on the 1904 1:2500 OS map. It appears to have pumped water to the castle and still contains a steel mill-wheel and some gearing and other equipment, with a sump area and water chamber built in masonry and concrete. The building is of some interest with potential for restoration, although the roof is deteriorating and the unlocked door making it potentially prone to damage.
