Watching Brief (November 2013 - December 2013)
NT 28820 71770 A watching brief was undertaken, November – December 2013, during construction work for a new Autism Daycare and Respite Centre at 157 Duddingston Road West. The work revealed evidence of late 19th- and early 20th-century buildings relating to the former Castle Brewery. The remains consisted of concrete and cobbled floor surfaces.

The Castle Brewery (NT27SE 6195) was built in 1901 (http://www.archives.gla.ac.uk/sba/sbacolls/gjm.html). It is first depicted on the OS 25-inch map (Edinburghshire (1909) sheet 4.09) to the south of Criagmiller Brewery (NT27SE 4354) and east of the North British Brewery (NT27SE 3828) . Brewing ceased at the Castle Brewery in 1966.
