Scope and Content Castle Brewery, Duddingston Road West, Edinburgh The area to the south of Duddingston village was developed for brewing in the late 19th century, after the opening of the Edinburgh, Suburban & Southside Junction Railway in 1884. This was one of six large breweries which were built in the area at that time. This shows the street frontage of the brewery, which extended a long way back from this frontage. The brewhouse is immediately to the left of the chimney. On the left is a block of silos for the bulk storage of barley for malting. This brewery was built by Maclachlans Ltd, originally the Glasgow concern of G & J Maclachlan, with a brewery in Maryhill. The company was taken over in 1960 by J & R Tennent, who put their name on this brewery, but who were in turn taken over in 1963 by Charringtons, who closed this brewery.
