Activities

Field Visit (5 April 2005 - 7 April 2005)

Very marked horizontal terrace fronting NE half of central greenhouse. The breaks of slope are very clear and even and the terrace is generally on excellent condition. It is notable that it creates a very level surface in front of the main greenhouse by being very built up at the NE end and less so to the SW. It also incorporates a semi-circular projection directly in front of the original greenhouse entrance. This suggests that the terrace was built contemporary with greenhouse and that it’s function was to enhance the façade of the buildings. It is, therefore, important to preserve the terrace along with the buildings and to make sure that maintenance such as mowing is done sensitively. Scipio’s land is marked on Foulis estate map though the detail is unclear – this depiction does not support the analysis

of this feature as a house platform.
