Archaeology Notes

HY62SW 8 6176 2487.

At HY 6176 2487 is a probable Orkney-Cromarty-type stalled chambered cairn, represented by a turf covered stony mound c24.0m NW - SE by c10.0m transversely and c1.8m high. It is truncated in the NW by coastal erosion, and its outline is obscured by cultivation. The tops of five slabs on edge protrude through the turf, apparently of a stalled chamber, and in the NE is a short length of drystone walling c1.0m long, possibly of an associated retaining wall.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (AA) 19 July 1970.

A probably rectangular stalled cairn. The tips of four more broken slabs were noted situated in line of the main axis, emphasising the stalled nature of the cairn.

The passage is not apparent.. plan amended. (Confirmed by A S Henshall).

Visited by OS (JLD) 13 May 1982.

Activities

Field Visit (July 1979)

HY62SW 8 6176 2487.

Within the curtilege of a long-abandoned croft is a mound 24m NW-SE by 10m and 1.8m high; it has protruding upright slabs which indicates that it contains a stalled chamber.

D Fraser 1982; RCAHMS 1984, visited July 1979.

Field Visit (12 May 2024)

HY 61760 24870 Visited during fieldwork by SCAPE. No change to description but more vegetated so edge set stones are not visible.

Information from J. Mitchell, J. Hambly, S. Boyd and I. Cooper - Scottish Coastal Archaeology and the Problem of Erosion (SCAPE).
