Architecture Notes

Fern Parish Church was recorded as part of the Threatened Buildings Survey on 3rd August 2023. The survey was prompted by the proposed closure and sale of the church as part of the re-organisation of the Church of Scotland’s estate. The church was built in 1883 by Carver and Symon of Forfar on the site of an 1806 church. The site of the medieval church is believed to be in the graveyard. A Gothic box with a northeast vestry and a south entrance saddle-roofed tower. The interior gas a collar-braced roof. The interior fittings including the pews, font and pulpit appear to be original. The stained glass includes the West window by C E Kempe & Co of 1933, a war memorial window of c.1920 on the south wall and windows by A Ballentine of 1909 above and to the south of the pulpit on the East wall.
