Field Visit (1996 - 1998)

There are two crofts in this area marked on the 1902 OS map, with crofthouses Camustrol (44) to the W, Canapress(39) to the E and a new house sited between them. There are the remains of an old head dyke, marked on the 1st ed OS, with 'fields' below it and open grazing above, but today the boundary of the hill grazing is marked by a cast iron post and wire fence further N and W.

Apart from the crofthouses and their associated storehouses/sheds, there are the following ruins:

185b NG82505768 A stone structure aligned NW-SE with a central entrance in the SW wall, measuring c3m by c2m over walls c0.5m thick and standing to the wallheads, with a single slope to the roof - the NE wall being higher than the SW. A well is marked on the OS map nearby.

185c NG82525756 (MM A21) Immediately E of the burn is an unroofed structure, aligned N-S with its entrance in the SE corner of the S wall, measuring c5.5m by c3m over walls c0.5m thick and standing to the wallheads. There roof had a single pitch - the E wall being higher than the W wall. The interior of the structure is cobbled and paved. To the E are three boat noosts just above high water mark, still in use. The cobbles have been cleared from the foreshore in front of them and they measure c5m long and c2m wide.

185d NG82585762 (MM A20) Down by the shore, in front of the new house, is an unroofed structure aligned SW-NE with a central entrance in the SE wall, which once had a pitched roof - the SW gable survives though the NE gable has collapsed. It measures c7m by c4m over walls c0.6m thick which stand to wallhead height towards the SW end.

185e NG82725758 (MM A1) Down by the shore, at the top of the pier (TOR186), is a rectangular structure aligned NW-SE that still has the remains of its heather thatch on ?birch pole rafters. The building has rounded ends, although the gables have been subsequently built up in stone almost to a ^ to take the pitched roof. Within both added gable tops there is a square vent hole. There is a central entrance in the SW wall. Two pairs of crucks are set into the long walls to take the weight of the roof. The structure measures c7m by c3m over walls c0.6m thick.

185f NG82735762 (MM A19) To the N of 185e is a larger unroofed rectangular structure aligned W-E which had a pitched roof and entrance set in the W part of the S wall. It measures c8m by c4m over walls c0.6m thick and stands to the wallheads and the full gable heights. The W gable has a slit vent in its upper half.
