(NO 3848 5625) Standing Stone (NR)

OS 6" map, Forfarshire and Angus, 2nd ed., (1927)

A standing stone, 1.6m high by 0.7m by 0.8m, tapering to a pointed top and leaning northwards. It is unsculptured although Crawford (1949) mentions 'artificial pockmarks about 1" apart' on the west face. These appear to be due to weathering. Warden (1880-5) says this stone was surrounded by a stone circle more than 18m in diameter and Reid (1909) notes that the positions of at least six stones can be traced to the south of the remaining stone, when the field is in grass; but none was noted during field investigations. Crawford notes that the stone stands on a mound but this is not so.

A Reid 1909; A J Warden 1880-5; O G S Crawford 1949.

No change to the report of 2 September 1958.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS (BS) 6 January 1977.

Scheduled as Caddam, standing stone.

Information from Historic Scotland, scheduling document dated 16 February 2001.
