Archaeology Notes (14 January 1975)

NO33SW 13 3195 3[2]25.

The Statistical Account (OSA 1794) mentions a souterrain in Fowlis Easter. It seems to have been demolished about the middle of the 19th c, for Stuart states that at Mains of Fowlis, "a subterranean apartment" has been uncovered; its stone walls were removed to aid in raising the farm-steading, and the space filled in.

Mr Smith (information from P K M Smith, Mains of Fowlis) pointed out an area (centred NO 3195 3325) where the plough regularly turns up an unusual number of stones, among which were the upper stones of three querns, each about 14" in diameter. This area is on the gentle slope of a low ridge, and is a very suitable site for a souterrain.

Note (9 May 2019)

This site record has been relocated 100m to the N on the basis that the position typed on the OS Record Card in 1975 (NO 3195 3325) corresponds to the information published by Wainwright (1963, 188). The previous position (NO 3195 3225), handwritten on the Record Card and reproduced on the OS Record Sheet for the area, is presumably incorrect.

Information from HES (GFG) 9 May 2019.
