Desk Based Assessment (15 June 2017)
Nothing is now visible in an area occupied by modern office buildings at Glasgow Harbour Terraces of the Partick Sawmills, which are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 25-inch map (Lanark 1865, Sheet VI.5). They stood on the north bank of the River Clyde, occupying an area measuring 150m from E to W by 140m transversely, and they were separated from Merklands farmsteading immediately to the W by Sawmill Road which led down to a jetty (NS56NW 548). The 2nd edition of the OS 25-inch map (Lanarkshire 1893, 006.05) shows that additional buildings had been constructed within the yard, the jetty had been remodelled into a landing stage and the timber pond, formerly little more than an area of foreshore, was furnished with a battered stone wall on its NW side. The Partick Sawmills were owned by Robinson Dunn and Company, timber importer and saw millers. The operation closed in 1933.
