Activities

Field Visit (23 November 2017)

Street art has been painted onto boards that cover the windows of the empty shop at 51 South Street. To the left of the entrance door is written ‘Feel Good Festival 2012’, which refers to a Morayshire-wide festival -- part of the Scotland Mental Health Arts and Film Festival in 2012. The boarding to the right of the door has been painted to celebrate the same festival.

Visited by HES (AGCH, ZB, JB) 23 November 2017.

Standing Building Recording (14 December 2023 - 19 December 2023)

NJ 21577 62744 AOC Archaeology Group was commissioned to undertake an historic building survey at 51 South Street. The current building was constructed in ca. 1920 – 1930. It comprises a two-storey building with Art Deco style frontage with warehouse/storage areas to the rear. The building was in use for retail purposes until 2008. It is now in a poor state of repair with water damage visible on all floors and structural cracks visible on the external elevations. The building was added to the Buildings At Risk Register for Scotland (Ref No. 3534) in 2008 due to its poor condition.

Watching Brief (23 January 2024 - 25 January 2024)

NJ 21559 62774 (centred) An archaeological watching brief was undertaken. During this time, a total of 13 test pits were monitored to expose existing building foundations and natural sub soils. Six test pits were excavated within Toymaster, 51 South Street and Junners, 57-61 South Street with the remaining test pits excavated externally. Two wall structures, possibly representing original walls identified on the 1868 Ordnance Survey town plan were located. A small collection of finds were encountered during the monitoring works, including 2 horseshoes, 5 iron nails, 12 lumps of slag material, 2 dark glass bottle bases and associated shards, 1 long thin metal bracket, 5 bone fragments, mortar, 17 fragments of post-medieval pottery and the sole along with fabric from a small leather shoe.
