NJ 21559 62774 (centred) An archaeological watching brief was undertaken. During this time, a total of 13 test pits were monitored to expose existing building foundations and natural sub soils. Six test pits were excavated within Toymaster, 51 South Street and Junners, 57-61 South Street with the remaining test pits excavated externally. Two wall structures, possibly representing original walls identified on the 1868 Ordnance Survey town plan were located. A small collection of finds were encountered during the monitoring works, including 2 horseshoes, 5 iron nails, 12 lumps of slag material, 2 dark glass bottle bases and associated shards, 1 long thin metal bracket, 5 bone fragments, mortar, 17 fragments of post-medieval pottery and the sole along with fabric from a small leather shoe.
