Field Visit (11 July 2010)
The lowest of the main cluster of cleits on the island is of particular note for its relationship to the field-system, overlying the NNW end of the field-bank that extends obliquely up the slope from the mouth of the gully leading down to the main landing. The cleit measures 3.8m from NE to SW by 1.8m in breadth over walls about 0.65m in thickness and up to 0.9m in height. At the entrance, which is in the NE end facing up the slope, there is a step down of 0.15m into the interior over a slab set on edge against the outside of the wall. The lintel of the entrance stands 0.5m above the floor of the interior, which is 0.6m wide, but this is the only part of the roof that remains in place, though at least two other lintels can be seen where they have fallen in on end into the interior. While the sides of the cleit have collapsed inwards, the SW end has fallen outwards down the slope.
