Activities

Field Visit (11 July 2010)

This cleit stands on the NW end of an artificial terrace, overlooking the main concentration of cleits on this island. It measures 3.3m from ENE to WSW by 2.4m transversely over walls 0.75m in thickness by a maximum of 1.2m in height. The entrance is in the uphill end on the ENE and still retains its lintel, one of five that remain in place at the upper end, but the downhill end has collapsed over the edge of the terrace. The entrance is 0.6m wide and its lintel stands 0.75m above the floor. Currently there is a step of 0.4m down into the interior, though part of this may be the remains of a blocking of the entrance. Several large stones protruding through the surface of the terrace immediately to the SE possibly represent the remains of an earlier cleit offset to this side, with the foundation of its NW wall possibly incorporated into the SSE side of its better preserved neighbour, which may account for why this side of the latter is markedly concave on plan.
