Archaeology Notes (1884)

Arthurstone, a large monolith associated with the Arthurian legend, formerly stood near the mansion of the same name. It was destroyed c 1791-2 for building purposes.

Activities

Field Visit (12 February 1969)

Enquiries at Arthurstone failed to find any definite information regarding the site of this stone. It may have stood in the field centred on NO 2590 4295 to the west of the house (Major Carmichael, Arthurstone).

Field Visit (5 April 1989)

This large standing stone was broken up in about 1792; it was situated near Arthurstone House (NO24SE 69.00), and may have stood close to a cairn, but its site cannot now be located.
