Archaeology Notes

NS06SE 416 06034 63867.

This farmstead was photographed in 2009 as part of an aerial survey programme which recorded a number of farmsteadings on Bute. It was not visited on the ground and the following description is based on an examination of the available evidence, including estate plans, historic maps, documentary evidence and aerial photographs.

Greenan farmsteading, which was not recorded in detail, is essentially a 19th century construction that has been added to in more recent times. 'Greenan' is depicted as a cluster of four single-storey buildings on a mid-18th century estate map (Foulis 1758-9: RHP14107/28), when it extended to 161 acres split into 'good arable clay land' to the S and E and 'good pasture moor' to the N. May's estate map of 1781 describes Greenan as a farm of 158 acres (71 arable, 21 grass and pasture, 66 hill and moor), with a farmstead of six buildings. Greenan is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Buteshire 1869, Sheet CCIV) as two L-plan buildings forming a courtyard with yards to the E and W and a quarry about 140m to the W. The contemporary Name Book (No.6, p.62) describes it as 'a farm house and offices, the property of the Marquis of Bute'.
